Gift #561

One of the most important principles in relationships is...

"Connection before correction."

This principle can be stated in several different ways...
1. Connection over perfection - Connect before context and context before content
2. Care before repair
3. Being interested over being interesting
4. Benefit of the doubt before benefit of the shout
5. Seek first to understand and then to be understood

One of the most powerful ways to connect is the simple formula PQR...

Pause - After the other person finishes speaking. This prevents interruption and non-verbally shows you are listening.

Question - Check you understanding and invite them to elaborate and clarify

Reflect - Share your understanding and insight with them

May even your criticism be offered as "feedforward" (what they did well and inquiring together how they can improve) instead of "feedback" (what they did well and where they messed up) so that it builds people up and inspires them to do their best.
