Gift #533

So whats your source of happiness in work - pleasure, passion or purpose?

All these three belong to our vocational happiness.

Apart from this we also experience these 5 different types of happiness

1. Nature happiness: This is the kind of joy that can be derived from the creation, the happiness we experience through our physical senses when we encounter mountains, rivers, lakes, trees, flowers, animals, seasons, weather, food, etc.,

2. Social happiness: We find so much wonderful pleasure in our family and our friends.

3.  Physical happiness: The joy we have in being fit, strong, and healthy, able to do what we want to do.

4. Intellectual happiness: The pleasure that comes from understanding something – analyzing it, explaining it, improving it, remembering it, using it.

5. Humor happiness: God created humanity with a sense of humor to enjoy jokes and funny stories.

Now although these sources are different the happiness achieved from it basically falls into 2 main categories...

The first type, known as EUDAIMONIC happiness, is associated with a sense of purpose or a meaning in life.

The second, known as HEDONIC happiness, is happiness as the result of “consummatory self-gratification” or happiness not associated with a purpose but rather a response to an event, stimulus or behavior.

Research shows us is that doing good and feeling good have very different effects on our health, even though they generate similar levels of positive emotion.

In essence, true happiness - the kind rooted in virtue - can help prevent disease. It keeps inflammation - which is linked to numerous ills in the body, including heart disease - at bay while still fighting off infection and disease.

That’s perhaps one reason Mother Theresa lived to 87, despite being around the sick and dying for so many years.
