We generally are grateful only of the good things or events or people in our life.
As in the word of Steve Jobs "You cant connect the dots looking forward, you can only connect them backwards."
Upon reflection we find that the events from the past which we later cherish in life are often the most negative ones when they happened. So why not start connecting the dots as and when they happen?
Seems difficult to start with however can be learnt as a habit when we regularly do the task of "Three good things with a twist"
Being grateful for a negative situation makes one aware of the opportunities that arise from the situation. When we focus on the opportunities triggered by the event we automatically lower our tendency to label it as a negative situation. Thus we trigger positive solutions for the event.
